Students from the Greek Language and Culture Schools of the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria have participated in ΤΟ ΒΗΜΑ newspaper’s nationwide student journalism initiative, “Το Βήμα των Μαθητών” (Students’ Voice), by producing their own student newspaper, “Το Βήμα της Μελβούρνης” (The Melbourne Edition of To Vema – Students’ Voice). The initiative marks the second stop of the “Diaspora Edition of To Vema“ in Australia and showcases the voices of young Greek Australians through journalism, research, and public dialogue.

The newspaper was created by Year 11 students, who researched, wrote, and edited articles that reflected the lives and experiences of Melbourne’s Greek community. Through interviews, feature stories, and personal reflections, they explore the history of the Greek diaspora, highlight the enduring contribution of the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria, and examine contemporary expressions of Greek Australian identity. The publication includes articles on Melbourne’s rebetiko music scene, the influence of Greek and Cypriot cuisine, sport, education, and the experiences of young people growing up in the Greek diaspora.

The project was coordinated and academically supervised by Mr Odysseas Krypotos, a teacher at the Greek Community Schools of Melbourne and Victoria, who worked closely with the students throughout every stage of the publication, from selecting topics and conducting journalistic research to writing, editing, and refining each article. Through their participation, students developed valuable skills in research, critical thinking, collaboration, and creative writing in Greek while sharing their own perspectives on the Greek Australian community.

More than simply a student newspaper, The Melbourne Edition of To Vema serves as a bridge between Greece and the Greek diaspora. It offers an authentic snapshot of contemporary Greek life in Australia and demonstrates how the Greek language continues to inspire, connect, and empower young people living abroad. At the same time, it highlights the important educational work of the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria, which has been nurturing the Greek language and cultural heritage for almost a century.
