Kelly Thoma and Mayu Shviro met at the Lavyrinth Music Workshop in Crete and have been collaborating since 2016. Together they will present a program of contemporary tropical compositions by Kelly Thoma with cello and lyre, influenced by various musical traditions of the world with a strong element of improvisation and creative approach to old sounds. This duet is characterized by both virtuosity and musicality with the two bows weaving in a magical dance of melodies and rhythms.
Mayu Shviro (cello). Born in Israel of Japanese and Iraqi descent, she began her cello studies at the age of 6. At 18 she discovered tropical music and decided to immerse herself in this genre out of admiration for its power and beauty. Thus began her musical journey with her cello in Arabic, Turkish and Azeri traditions. Today she plays and records with various types of music groups and gives concerts both in Israel and abroad. In summer 2018 she was a member of the MITOS tropical music orchestra of the Labyrinth Music Workshop.
Kelly Thoma (“lyre”) was born in Piraeus. In 1995 she started to play the lyre with Ross Daly as her teacher. Since 1998 she has been travelling with him and his band “Labyrinthos” in cities in Europe, Asia, America and Australia. Through this experience she has collaborated with renowned musicians of various traditions of the world, which has contributed significantly to the formation of the special sound that characterizes her playing. She has collaborated with very important names in the world’s traditional music scene such as Trio Chemirani, Zohar Fresco, Pedram Khavar Zamini, Efren Lopez, Dhruba Ghosh, Ballake Sissoko, Mayu Shviro, and many others. Since 2008 he has been collaborating with the Norway-based string quartet Tokso. He has released three solo recordings , Anamkhara (2009), 7Fish (2014) and “Amma pohasun tis times” (2018) which have received excellent reviews from international magazines and music producers. Among others, he has performed with Ross Daly in major theatres and festivals such as Theatre de la Ville, Carnegie Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Berliner Philarmoniker, Thessaloniki Concert Hall, Athens Concert Hall and many others.
