Art Appel Gallery inaugurates on Friday, October 7, the interdisciplinary exhibition of paintings by two young artists from Thessaloniki, Penelope Akritidou and Ion Rudolf. The exhibition features oils on canvas by Penelope Akritidou in bold colours and pastels on paper in black and white tones by Ion Rudolf.
More specifically, considering the individual as a social cell, Penelope Akritidou creates in each of her works a different environment with similar conditions, commenting on its interaction with society.
Her works depict the organic microcosm of microbes and cells. The particular environment created in each work is derived from images of viruses, whether it is a mass accumulated to enclose cells, or content from a non-human organism, leading to cell killing.
By using successive layers of color and bright colors, he seeks to emphasize the constant and intense impact of humans on the modern environment.
Ion Rudolf’s works seek to explore the forgotten world of the unexplained, the inscrutable metaphysical, the mystical tradition. He wants to remind the viewer of the unseen world of spirits and the magic of nature by introducing him to a mystagogical process of initiation into a special respect for the universe.
He uses insects which are transmuted by sacred shapes and magical symbols into spirits.
They are depicted as oversized, otherworldly and menacing, claiming respect for their existence. The design semiotics and aesthetics are a direct reference to the pages of a magical book that the viewer flips through in their own time, participating in the effortless ritual of transformation.
