The English-language Postgraduate Programme (MSc) “Studies in the Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean: Culture and International Relations” is offered by the School of Humanities, Social and Economic Sciences of the University Centre for International Studies Programmes of the International University of Greece (IUG).

The program is based on an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the history and culture of the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean, offering two specialization tracks: the “Archaeology and Cultures” track and the “International Relations and History” track. The study and interpretation of the historical and cultural data of these regions, which are of great historical, geopolitical, and economic importance, offer students a unique opportunity to specialize in an extremely important research field of our time. The courses are taught entirely in English and the lecturers come from universities in Greece and abroad.

The Black Sea region and the Eastern Mediterranean basin, with their particular geophysical and cultural characteristics, are becoming particularly important as geopolitical links between Europe and Asia, but also as a field of geopolitical competition and conflict between the West and the East. The important natural resources and the sensitive location of these regions at the crossroads of international communication routes have aroused the interest of many nations over the centuries, bringing about countless events of great cultural and historical value.

The Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean are two major international gateways of exceptional value for Europe and the West, as well as for Asia and the East. Over the last decades, research centers and university departments have been promoting projects focusing on these regions, with rich research results. Particularly concerning the Black Sea region, this MSc is the first in the world to delve into this region from antiquity to the present day and has been offered by the IHU since 2010, with graduates from dozens of countries from all five continents to date.

Through its two tracks, “Archaeology and Cultures” and “International Relations and History”, the English-language MSc provide specialized training in various disciplines such as Archaeology, Ethnography, Historical Geography, Art, Religious Studies, Mythology, History, International Relations, Politics, and Diplomacy.

The MSc accepts graduates, after careful selection, from the Departments of History-Archaeology, Social Sciences, Humanities, Political Sciences, Geography, International Relations, Theology, Journalism, Balkan, Mediterranean, and Oriental Studies, as well as other relevant Departments, both from Greek Universities and from equivalent institutions abroad.
