The striking results of the “COVID-19 MEntal health inTernational for the General Population (COMET-G) Study” will be presented at an online event on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 18.00.

The international study COMET-G was organized under the auspices of the Department of Medicine and the Rectorate of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the World Psychiatric Association. The survey was designed and conducted by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and ran from March 2020 to April 2021. Responses from 55,589 people in 40 countries were collected, with a large questionnaire that allowed for an in-depth study of their mental state, their attitude towards the pandemic and the changes it brought to their personal and daily lives.

Preliminary data show that clinical depression has affected approximately 18% (on weighted average) of the global population over the past 12 months, with the same percentage of people experiencing severe stress. The quality of life of the entire population seems to have been severely affected, while problems have arisen in family relationships as well. The impact of the pandemic has also been particularly serious for people with a history of psychiatric conditions, who displayed very high rates of suicidal thoughts (almost 15%).

The study results will be presented in detail at the online event, by the Scientific Officer responsible for the study, Professor of Psychiatry at the Department of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos Foundoulakis. Speeches will be delivered by the Rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Professor Nikolaos G. Papaioannou, the President of the Department of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Professor Kyriakos Anastasiadis and the President of the World Psychiatric Association, Afzal Javed.
