The Laboratory of Biographical Learning and Transformative Adult Education of the School of Humanities of the Hellenic Open University is pleased to announce the organization of an open online discussion with Professor Antonia Darder, on Thursday 15 February 2024 (18:00 – 20:00). The online discussion will be implemented through the Webex application (https://hou.webex.com/meet/gkoulaouzidis) and will be broadcast on the HOU’s YouTube channel. The topic of the discussion/presentation is Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed and its relevance for the contemporary world. Focusing on the seminal work of Paulo Freire, the invited speaker will proceed with a detailed analysis of the central concepts of the great Brazilian thinker’s approach in order to highlight the relevance of his ideas. The meeting will take the form of an open dialogue with the participants.

Dr. Antonia Darder has been distinguished internationally for her research on liberation education and the applications of critical education. She is considered one of the most important intellectuals in this field and, in addition to her academic duties, is known for her activist and artistic work (poetry and painting). She is a Professor at Loyola Marymount University in California.

Her work focuses on issues of racism, political economy, social justice and education. She is particularly concerned with Paulo Freire’s contribution to understanding inequalities in education and society. Darder’s critical theory of interculturality links issues of culture, power and pedagogy to issues of social justice in education. She has authored a particularly large number of books including Culture and Power in the Classroom, Reinventing Paulo Freire: A Pedagogy of Love, A Dissident Voice: Essays on Culture, Pedagogy, and Power, and Freire and Education.
