Athens – Nafplio, 10-12 June 2022

The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy, in cooperation with the European Parliament and the parliaments of Estonia, Spain, Italy, Cyprus and Portugal, is organizing an international scientific conference on “Digital Technologies and the Stakes for Representative Democracy”. The conference will take place on 10 and 11 June in the Senate Hall of the House of Representatives and will conclude with a session at the Parliament building in Nafplio on Sunday 12 June 2022.

In recent years, the necessity, but also the limits of the so-called “digital transition” have been a dominant issue in the public debate on governance at European level. What is the future of representative democracy? Has representative democracy become obsolete? How should it adapt to the new technological and social reality? In this context, the role of technology in democratic processes, artificial intelligence, the extent of the impact of social media on the electoral behaviour of voters and politicians, issues of transparency and the need to adapt to the new digital age are key issues for reflection. The aim of the conference is to draw useful conclusions from the dialogue between academics and representatives of parliaments on the management of the situation so far and to propose lines of approach for the future.
