On the occasion of the rich research production on the level of local history in recent years, the Society of Cretan Historical Studies / Historical Museum of Crete with the support of the Region of Crete and in cooperation with the Vikelaia Municipal Library of Heraklion and the General State Archives – Department of the General Archives of Heraklion, organizes a series of presentations for the promotion of contemporary scientific research to the wider public.

The main objective of the event is to start a broader discussion on the perspectives that exist in the field of local research, the ways in which it can be supported and promoted. Through this process, the public will be able to come into direct contact with the academic world, meet new researchers and the results of recent historiographical research, learn about the archival material, its extent, availability, the state in which it is in and the institutions that host it. These meetings will take place on selected Saturday mornings between February 24 and April 13, 2024, in the auditorium of the History Museum. The detailed programme of the tribute will be announced soon on the Museum’s website and social media.

The first meeting, on Saturday 24 February, will be attended by Antonis Anastasopoulos, Professor of Ottoman History at the University of Crete, and Konstantinos Kanakis, PhD Candidate in Modern History at the University of Crete, “The health sector in Crete during the Ottoman period (17th-20th century)” and Stavros Sfakiotakis, a graduate of the Postgraduate Programme in Modern History at the University of Crete, on “Issues related to the Jewish presence in Greece and Crete”.
