He emigrated to the USA to study, completing his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Connecticut and his doctorate at American University in Washington (1964). From 1965 to 1983 he was Professor of International Relations at the School of International Service at American University. From 1983 to 1989 he served as a professor at the Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and from 1990 until his retirement (2002) he served at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He was President of the Society for International Law and International Relations (1985-87) and President of the Foundation for Studies of the Aegean Peninsula (1988-90).
