The west wing of the historic Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysius of Olympus, restored by the Ministry of Culture, has been returned to the monastic community, the residents, and the visitors of Pieria. It was founded in the 16th century on the slopes of Mount Olympus and has been inextricably linked to the region’s religious, historical, and cultural heritage.

The old Monastery of Saint Dionysius was built in the 16th century at an elevation of approximately 850 meters, within the Enipeas Gorge, about 17 kilometers from Litochoro in Pieria. It suffered repeated destruction: in 1753, 1790, 1822, and 1877, with the most devastating event occurring in 1943, when it was blown up by the occupying forces.

The Historic Monastery and the Work on the West Wing

The monastic complex, measuring approximately 50 x 50 meters, is a prime example of monastic architecture, with two- and three-story wings surrounding the inner courtyard, at the center of which stands the katholikon.

As part of the project, the bell tower and the west wing were fully restored and returned to use, the northwest corner of the monastery and the abbot’s quarters, over their entire height, as well as the necessary reconstruction of masonry and domes, in accordance with surviving evidence, addressing the structural and functional problems of the buildings.

The restoration project was carried out by the Directorate for the Restoration of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments of the Ministry of Culture, with funding from the Regional Operational Program “Central Macedonia” – NSRF 2014–2021.
