The conditions for recreational diving in the

91 shipwrecks and aircraft wrecks classified as monuments

By Joint Decision of the Ministers of National Defence Nikos Panagiotopoulos, Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni and Maritime and Insular Policy Yannis Plakiotakis, the conditions for conducting recreational diving in the 91 shipwrecks and aircraft wrecks classified as monuments by the Ministry of Culture and Sports. The 91 wrecks belong to metal ships and aircraft that sank between 1868 and 1970 – most of them from the period of the Second World War – and are located at depths ranging from 10 to 120 metres.

The KYA sets out the specific information that recreational service providers and private divers must submit before each dive, as well as the guidelines for documenting wrecks. It should be noted that diving in wrecks is only permitted once the documentation has been completed and that divers are prohibited from any act or negligence that results in interference with, and therefore contact with, damage or alteration of the wrecks, as well as the collection, removal or simple movement of any movable objects found in the wrecks or on the bottom or seabed around them. It shall also be prohibited to carry out a search for the purpose of discovering movable objects both in the wreck and in the surrounding area of the wreck and which may be connected with it.

Any search of the wreck and its surroundings shall be subject to authorisation by the ΥΠΠΟΑ.
