The protection and enhancement of the Mytilene Castle is progressing rapidly. A number of important studies have now been completed – geotechnical, architectural, structural studies of the Great Enclosure, the Acropyrgos, the Ottoman Powder keg- so that the restoration work, which is being carried out by the Ministry of Culture through the competent Ephorate of Antiquities of Lesvos, can proceed without any problems.

North and West Wall of the Lower Castle

The aim of the project is the restoration of the structures to ensure their structural continuity, with the meticulous preservation of all original materials. The interventions include strengthening the structure of the upper section, installing a drainage system, completing the arches in the gun ports, constructing new parapets on the western wall and completing the cobbled walkway.

Great enclosure of the Upper Castle

The complex of the Great Enclosure is facing structural problems, problems of operation and safety of visitors, as well as problems of highlighting its archaeological value. In terms of visitor safety, the complex is not accessible to visitors due to its poor state of preservation and the difficulty of access to all areas. The Acropyrgos in particular is practically inaccessible, as there is no bridge to its entrance and no possibility of descending to the ground floor level. The work planned for the Acropyrgos, the Towers and the Peribolos involves interventions in the walls, the visitor corridors and the openings. In the Powder keg, the works concern the masonry, vaults, arches, roof, openings, floors and railings. The aim is to restore the structures to ensure their structural continuity, preserving the original materials and incorporating new structures such as railings, staircases and pathways to facilitate visitor access.
