The National Archaeological Museum welcomes the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina, launching its new action entitled “Museum Meetings at the National Museum“, thus implementing its vision for dialogue with the Museums of the Periphery.

The Museum becomes the hosting shell for a series of small-scale presentations of selected works of antiquity kept in regional museums, with the primary aim of arousing the visitor’s interest and encouraging her/him to visit the Museums and the places of origin of these important exhibits.

On Wednesday 13 December 2023 at 17:00, in the Altar Hall of the National Archaeological Museum, ten ancient lead inscriptions from the Sanctuary of Zeus and Dione in Dodona will be presented, on the occasion of the inclusion of all the inscfriptions of Dodona in the international catalogue “Memory of the World” of UNESCO, in May 2023.

The questions that the pilgrims posed to the deities are distinguished between public and private. The public ones are relatively few, are posed by cities or by commoners and usually concern political or religious issues, while most of them are private and concern issues that in all times concern people and cause them stress, such as family, health, professional, mobility, property. They are small fragments of a few centimetres, which are generally palimpsests because they have been used many times over the years.

As part of the action, an event with lectures on the lead inscriptions of Dodona will be held by archaeologists from the Ioannina Antiquities Ephorate and the National Archaeological Museum, as well as by professors from the University of Ioannina.
