NLG has a collection of publications about Maria Callas, which was enriched in 2022 with the significant donation of approximately 1800 items by Benedict Gagelmann, reflecting the breadth of international literature on Callas.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great soprano, part of the collection of the National Library Greece is presented for the first time, books for children, young people and adults: publications from Canada to South Africa and from Guatemala to Japan. Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to discover a wide variety of publications about Callas – from fictional biographies and studies to comics and cookbooks – in many languages. They will also be able to explore how Callas’ impact on global publishing is reflected in an interactive digital map.

The exhibition was curated by the museologist Andromachi Gazi, professor at the Department of Communication, Media and Culture of Panteion University.

Within the framework of the exhibition, guided tours will be offered to the public.

At the same time, an educational programme entitled “Maria Callas: Soprano in despair at the Library“.

National Library Greece invites its young readers to become musical researchers in a game of mystery and discovery. Guided by their imagination and inspired by books from all over the world, our little friends will give “voice” and colour to a concertina book, unraveling the most important milestones of Maria Callas’ life.
