Film Festival at the Hellenic American Union

The Hellenic American Union in cooperation with MoovieReel presents the
American Book Club“, a tribute to subversive American authors through the magic of the 7th art. The festival takes place March 8-10, 2022, at
Hellenic American Union Theatre (22 Massalias 22, Athens).

Through fiction films and documentaries, introduced by well-known Greeks,
the rich literary worlds of great writters is highlighted, such as Truman Capote (In Cold Blood), of
Tennessee Wiliams (Glass World), the Nobel Prize winner for Literature
Ernest Hemingway and Alice Walker, the first African-American woman
to win the Pulitzer Prize.

Tuesday 8 March 19:00: The Purple Colour
Steven Spielberg | USA | 1985 | 154′
Introduction: Yannis Kantea-Papadopoulos, Film Critic, Athinorama
The Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Alice Walker, about the lives of poor, black women in a racist society.
America in the 1930s, is skillfully transferred by Steven Spielberg to the big screen, giving the film 11
Academy Award nominations. At the center of the story is Shelly (Whoopi Goldberg, in her first
film appearance), whose search for fulfillment in a world closed to her turns into a
a triumph of love against cruelty, of joy against pain.

Wednesday 9 March 19:00: Gary Cooper & Ernest Hemingway

An unexpected look at the friendship between two giants, Gary Cooper (Two Oscar winner) and Ernest
Hemingway (Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner). Complete opposites, the conservative and the liberal,
their friendship is also a study of the 20th century.

life and all its often tragic endings, captured in a historically and emotionally precious document.
