The dual photography exhibition “Forsaken Places” is inspired by the timelessness of an abandoned space-place that encloses the telling of human stories. It essentially presents the “psychogram” of an abandoned place through the “conceptual framework” and “documentary record”.

Space is a place of encounter with the reality that contains it. Each place is a unique world. Familiar or unfamiliar, with a nostalgic atmosphere, soundscape or with the identity of a memory, it is undoubtedly subjectively perceived but existent for whoever is in it. Yet its narrative involves the “world space” of human “levitation”.

The Photography Exhibition “Forsaken Places” aims to communicate the combination of photographic documentary and conceptual photography in order for the viewer to revive the conditions of abandoned spaces but at the same time to broaden his/her thinking on the concept of “abandonment”. The performance of the work has a modernist character that allows for a multi-layered readability. The focus on human stigma, the penetrating perspective and abstraction are some of the elements that make up the aesthetics of the frames.

Since this is a dual exhibition, photographers Hypatia Kornarou and Elisabeth Efstathiou differentiate themselves through the personal style of their artistic identity. Their common point is the “meeting places”.

For the completion of the project, a Photographic Journey took place in various parts of Greece, specifically in places and structures that played an important role in the country’s history and are no longer functioning.

Due to the riskiness of the project, the desire to communicate an additional social message concerning “female creativity-initiative” was born.

The photo shoot started in January 2023 and was completed in March 2024. A total of 5,179 kilometres were covered in more than 20 different parts of Greece, as indicated: Ptolemaida, Kastoria, Patras, Aigio, Ermioni, Thebes, Methana, Megalopolis, Elefsina, Lavrio, Salamina, Megalo Pefko. The shootings have taken place in a wide variety of locations. The photographic lens has penetrated factory units for the production of raw materials, psychiatric clinic buildings and even workers’ residences in an industrial mining zone.

The central hall of the space will host the exhibition “Forsaken Places” and the small hall will show thematic video art.

The same space of the “Forsaken Places” photography exhibition will also contain an exhibition of abandoned objects. The parallel activity of the exhibition lies in the desire of the artists to convey to the viewer part of the atmosphere of the abandoned places.
