Since 2009, Greek society had been facing a deep economic crisis. On May 25, 2011, while yet another agreement (the “medium-term” plan) on harsh austerity measures was under discussion, thousands of people began gathering daily in Syntagma Square, seeking to express their opposition and anger toward the political system and the government and to demand dignity and social justice. Inspired by the Spanish Indignados movement (the outraged, the indignant), citizens from different political and ideological backgrounds organized themselves through social media and practically took up residence in Syntagma Square for two and a half months.

Through his daily presence (from May 25 to July 13, 2011) at this mass movement—unprecedented in Greek history up to that point—Pavlos Satoglou used his camera to capture faces, moments, slogans, assemblies, and clashes in a uniquely rich body of work comprising over 13,000 images. Fifteen years later, he presents a selection of these photographs in his solo exhibition “Syntagma Square: Photographic Testimonies from the Anti-Austerity Protests of 2011,” he presents a selection of these photographs, seeking to honor and remind us of the power of collective presence in public space.

His images are not limited to photojournalistic documentation. Satoglou does not merely document; at the same time, he actively participates in the crowd and the turmoil of the times. Looking at his photographs, the exhibition visitor does not get the impression of someone observing from a distance but of someone actively participating in the scenes being photographed.

Pavlos D. Satoglou holds a bachelor’s degree in Photography (Athens Technological Educational Institute, 1996), as well as master’s degrees in “Graphic Arts – Multimedia” (Hellenic Open University, 2010) and in “Video Production, Audiovisual Media and Motion Graphics” (PADA, 2019), as well as in education (EPPAIK–ASPITE, 2012). He is a freelancer whose main activity is Photography and Video Services. He teaches in the Department of Photography and Audiovisual Arts at the University of West Attica (as an independent instructor, the courses: “Special Techniques of Analog Photography” and “Interactive Multimedia II”), in the Photography Group at the Athens University of Economics and Business, as well as at Public Schools of Higher Vocational Training (in the Photography Art specialization). He is a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece, having presented his visual art and photography work in twelve solo and numerous group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.
