The 6th Painting Workshop of the Athens School of Fine Arts is organising the exhibition ‘Beyond the 6th’, featuring works by its graduates and collaborators from the period 2013–2025, which will take place from 3 to 15 November 2026 at the ‘Melina’ Cultural Centre of the City of Athens, with the support of the City of Athens Organisation for Culture, Sport and Youth (OPANDA).

The exhibition brings together a variety of artistic approaches developed within the workshop, highlighting research, experimentation, critical thinking and freedom in the choice of expressive media, all of which coexisted within an educational process that approached art as a field of exploration and personal discovery.

The exhibition ‘Beyond the 6th’ seeks to document not only the outcome of an educational journey, but above all its continuation: what remains when the apprenticeship ends and the artist is now faced with their own personal path.

The 6th Workshop was re-established in 2013 under the direction of Giorgos Kazazis, with the participation of various lecturers and collaborators (Magda Siamkouri, Panagiotis Siagris, Dimitra Hanioti, Dida Papalexandrou, Ioanna Kafida) and featuring a wide-ranging programme of exhibitions, lectures, workshops and artistic activities.

The aim of the workshop – and of its philosophy more broadly – was always to take into account the students’ year group, level, temperament and personality, whilst seeking to draw out their desires, needs and dreams. From the outset, emphasis was placed on observation, on the relationships between sizes, on the relationships between concepts, on tonal and chromatic differences, and the use of appropriate materials, so that students might acquire, from an early stage, a keen visual perception of the world, which requires, above all, heightened curiosity and the application of the basic principles of drawing.

Of particular importance were research and experimentation, which lead to the element of the ‘documented mistake’, which is a prerequisite for a work of art. Where appropriate, and placing great emphasis on the choice of medium, students were encouraged to realise their projects through computer-based work, performance, installations, constructions, painting, photography, etc.

As part of its activities, the 6th workshop organised occasional themed group exhibitions of its students’ work, in collaboration with the theory department of the Athens School of Fine Arts, so that the visual artists’ works and the theorists’ texts could coexist, with the ultimate aim of fostering a better and more meaningful understanding of the works by the wider public.
