The opening of an art exhibition was held on 16 October 2024 at the University of Cyprus on the occasion of the donation of the important collection of the artist Marios Loizidis. At the initiative of the goddaughter and heiress of the great artist’s works, Mrs. Electra Colios, the 29 works will adorn the premises of the higher academic institution.

The opening ceremony was inaugurated by the Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Tasos Christofides, who, in his address, stressed that “art, creative expression in its various manifestations and the viewing of works of art open horizons, inspire and stimulate interest”. Expressing his thanks to Ms. Colios for her valuable and selfless contribution, he assured that the art and memory of Marios Loizidis will remain alive with his works becoming an integral part of the University. Specifically, he said, the works will be displayed in selected areas of the campus, helping to link artistic creation with academia. The Rector also pointed out the artist’s significant contribution to Cypriot and international art, expressing the hope that the new generation will be inspired and get to know his work through this donation, creating a continuous dialogue between the viewers and the artist.

The ceremony was attended by members of the artist’s family, with Mrs Electra Colios, referring to his life and work. In her speech, after thanking the University of Cyprus for hosting her godfather’s works for future generations, she shared important moments from his life, revealing that he was a student of Adamantios Diamantis, who encouraged him to pursue his art, studying at the Central-Saint Martins School in London. He explained that his works were shown in many parts of the world. He pointed out that Marios Loizidis’ collection has been kindly donated by Canadian artist Chris Leech to the University of Cyprus and includes works created from the 1960s to the late 1980s. He also referred to the wide range of materials found in the artist’s works, from pastels and watercolours to collage and acrylics, as well as the deep dedication with which the artist approached each of his works.

The exhibition will remain open until 23 October 2024, giving the opportunity to all to visit it in the atrium exhibition space of the Council – Senate building “Anastasios G. Leventis” at the University Campus.
