The fiction film Broken Vein, directed by Yannis Economides, was selected as Greece’s official entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) in the United States.

It should be noted that, in accordance with Article 35 of Law 3905/2010 and Ministerial Decision No. YPPO/303859/02.07.2025 (B’ 3615), as amended by YPPO/267408/ June 15, 2026 (B’ 3626), the film representing Greece in the Academy Awards process for the Best International Feature Film category is nominated by the Ministry of Culture, following the unanimous opinion of a committee consisting of thirteen members and established exclusively for this purpose. The members of the committee are appointed by the Ministry of Culture upon recommendation by film organizations.

The Committee, established by decision of the Deputy Minister of Culture for the year 2026, held a meeting and, following a thorough discussion, proposed by a majority vote the film Broken Vein as Greece’s official entry, on the grounds that it is a film that is narratively, artistically and technically accomplished, which at the same time reinterprets motifs of ancient tragedy in a way that is recognizable to an international audience, through a narrative centered on the impasse faced by a hero set in present-day Greece, thus combining universal and local elements, by an internationally recognized director.

The Deputy Minister of Culture accepted the Committee’s opinion and issued the relevant decision, No. YPPO/393781/04.09.2026.

The Ministry of Culture is ensuring the timely completion of the procedures for Greece’s representation at the 99th Academy Awards, in accordance with the regulations of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
