Filming for Kings’ Fruit began in the vast, almost mythical landscapes of Thebes.
Director Efi Spyrou shares her thoughts, clarifying the nature of her work:
“Summer is fully here, and under its bright, relentless sun, very little can stay hidden for long. Secrets rise to the surface, and so do the monsters we carry inside us.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about self-sufficiency. Not as the fantasy of standing completely alone, but as the quiet strength that grows when we are held by our connections with others. It is a kind of independence built through care, trust, and shared responsibility.
These thoughts have been with me on my new short film, “Kings’ Fruit”.
Τhe film is a poetic essay honoring the resilience of women who bear invisible labor across generations, resisting a patriarchal system where violence has become normalized, embedded in topos, the body, and daily life.
As summer storms break through the heat, reminding us that nature always finds its own ways of healing and begin again, I feel deeply grateful for this shared strength. It is the presence, generosity, and trust of the team that make independent creation possible and give me the courage to keep standing against violence in all its forms.
Perhaps this is what self-sufficiency really means: not standing alone, but building the conditions in which we can continue creating together.
I feel truly grateful to be sharing this journey with people I love and admire. My dear friend and long-time collaborator- choreographer Marianna Kavallieratou brings the central female figure of the film to life, alongside the renowned Cypriot actor Andreas Vasileiou, who travelled from Cyprus to join us for the first days of filming. Through the sensitive eye of Director of Photography Zeta Spyraki, Kings’ Fruit is already beginning to find its own cinematic language.”
Filming will resume in October 2026, and anyone can support the film in a tangible way here.
