Arcadia Field Lab is an artistic initiative by Dimitra Maltabe and Panagiotis Voulgaris, bringing together the mountainous landscape with artistic practice, research, and experimentation. It creates a field of exploration into the relationships between nature, place, and contemporary art. The project is rooted in the experience of isolation in the mountains, where an old stone house in an Arcadian village, closed for many years, opens again and is transformed into a space for artistic creation and hospitality.

The initiative moves between two worlds: the direct, experiential process of creating within the natural environment and its connection with the local community, and its encounter with the digital sphere, where the work is documented, communicated, and transmitted through contemporary communication networks. The contrast between the materiality of place and the immaterial dimension of the internet forms a core element of its identity, linking the isolation and slow time of the mountain with the possibility of disseminating the work to a wider audience.

The house, now reaching its 100th year, is built on the mountainside beside the spring that supplies water to the village. Constructed entirely of stone, a material that dominates the architecture of Gortynia, it follows the local building tradition. Its defining feature is the 13 windows arranged around its façades, offering views of the surrounding mountains, the village, and the valley of the river. It stands at the passage connecting the four neighbourhoods of Kontovazaina, a historic mountain village in northwestern Arcadia, situated on the slopes of Mount Aphrodisio, known for its running waters, stone-built mansions and bridges, watermills, and its 18 churches.

Dimitra Maltabe studied painting and scenography at the Athens School of Fine Arts (studios of R. Papaspyrou and G. Ziakas) and at the Royal Academy of Art, K.A.B.K., The Hague, Netherlands, with an Erasmus scholarship. In 2000 she completed her MA in Fine Arts at the Kent Institute of Art and Design / University of Kent, Canterbury, UK. Her work explores the interaction between humans and the environment, the recording of memory and how it transforms over time, as well as the affinities between biological structures and the natural world. She has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad and has participated in artist-in-residence programs. dimitramaltabe.wordpress.com
