The Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Deputy Mayor’s Office for Culture, Tourism Development, and Intermunicipal Cooperation are moving forward with the creation of an open database for cataloging and networking artists active in the field of murals, issuing an open call for expressions of interest to artists.

The goal of the initiative is to establish a registry of artists with a distinguished career, a documented resume, and a representative sample of their work, which will serve as a reference point for future public art projects and visual art interventions in the urban space of Thessaloniki.

The online application form will remain open from August 25 through September 25, 2026. Interested artists will have the opportunity to submit their résumé, portfolio, and any relevant material that highlights their work and artistic practice.

Murals are one of the most dynamic forms of contemporary public art. They transform building facades and public spaces into open-air “art galleries,” enhancing a city’s aesthetic identity and creating points of cultural interest for residents and visitors alike. At the same time, they contribute significantly to the revitalization and restoration of the urban landscape, highlighting neighborhoods, strengthening a sense of belonging within local communities, and fostering public dialogue through art.

Through this initiative, the City of Thessaloniki seeks to strengthen the city’s connection with contemporary visual art, showcase emerging and established artists, and lay the groundwork for a long-term plan for public art projects that will contribute to the aesthetic, cultural, and social enhancement of public spaces.
