The rest of the programme of the International Festival of Patras for 2022, was presented on Wednesday, June 8th, at noon – at the “Ichthioskala”, where the International Sculpture Symposium is taking place, from the place where the “corner” dedicated to the sculptor Dionysis Gerolymatos has been formed – by the President of the Cultural Organization Katerina Geropanagioti.
The president of the Cultural Organization referred to the philosophy, the modules and the main axes of the institution for this year, noting the following:
“The Patras International Festival 2022 has already started its journey, from May 23, with the International Sculpture Symposium on the theme “1922-2022, Refugees”, which is being held at the new Multisite of Culture at the Ichthioskala, in South Park.
A basic and essential element of the Cultural Organization of the Municipality of Patras has been and continues to be the organization of the International Festival of Patras. In recent years, the Patras International Festival has maintained all the good elements of the previous years, enriching them and has added many activities, even more remarkable. Every year it becomes more mature and experienced in promoting culture to the people of the Municipality of Patras, despite the increasingly suffocating financial data and the serious shortages of staff and infrastructure.
As we have repeatedly said, the cultural organization the only income it has is from the subsidy of the Municipality, which in turn has income from the state, which collects from the Greek people with numerous taxes and fees. The Municipality should have a grant of 91 million euros. Instead, since 2010 it has 23 million euros! In this context we are managing, we are walking in a hostile environment, that is why we are protesting and demanding what we are entitled to.
As a Cultural Organisation we have to take care of all our artistic structures, all this is creating financial suffocation.
We demand that we be given everything that we are deprived of and, by extension, that the people of Patras are deprived of, namely funding and recruitment of permanent staff. We are making use, and you know it, of whatever possibilities there may be in a reactive legislative framework governing the operation of the municipalities.
Despite the suffocating circumstances and the lack of funding, we have taken into account the financial situation of the citizens, and we have set the ticket price so that everyone can attend the events, not just those who can afford them.
For the other events of the International Festival of Patras 2022
They are divided into two main categories, the musical-dance performances and the theatrical performances. Already within the framework of the parallel events the planning for the realization of the Amateur Theatre Festival, the Festival in the Neighbourhoods and the Karagiozis performances is being completed.
Musical performances:
Kicking off on Saturday, June 25 at Rio Castle with the Boston Youth Orchestra. One hundred musicians from the Boston Youth Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Benjamin Zander and Zlatomir Fung on cello, present an exciting program that opens with Maurice Ravel’s choreographed poem “The Waltz”. A work which, according to its author, is “a kind of apotheosis of the Viennese waltz”, full of dynamism and energy. It is followed by one of the most beloved orchestral writings for cello, Edward Elgar’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra. The evening will close with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5
The musical tribute to the Patrina rebetter Bambi Gole will also stand out, which will take place on Saturday 2 July at the Municipal Summer Theatre of the Municipality of Patreon (Pampeloponnissos Stadium, I. Ritsos Street – Gate 3).
Katerina Tsiridou, Antonis Ainitis and several other collaborators present a unique tribute – a tribute to their beloved collaborator and friend Bambi Gole.
The three-day jazz & More festival that will take place this year at the Old Slaughterhouse from Thursday 7 to Saturday 8 July is expected to be one of the highlights of the events.
The cycle will conclude on Tuesday 13 September with the Dimitris Mitropanos Tribute Concert at the Pabeloponnissos Stadium.
Peggy Zina, Miltos Paschalidis and Kostas Triantafyllidis, accompanied by the orchestra that accompanied Dimitris Mitroplanos, will remind us of the songs of a unique man and artist.
The events involve artistic groups of the Cultural Organization.
Theatrical performances:
We will attend performances that make their first stop in Epidaurus.
The Roman Odeon will be closed for the next two years due to works. Also, the “Thanos Mikroutsikos” Art Factory is closed according to the contract signed, with a budget of 1,800,000 euros, and will be restored by acquiring a central stage with 800 seats.
The Old Municipal Slaughterhouses were rejected as a venue, mainly for theatrical performances, due to the high noise level in the area.
For the above reasons and not wanting to deprive the Patracian theatre-loving public of the summer theatre performances, a new venue is being created, next to the Pampeloponnesian Stadium, on Ioannis Ritsos Street, opposite the parking lot that serves as an auxiliary to the Stadium. This space is already amphitheatrical and has the appropriate draw that a theatre infrastructure needs, and the noise levels are very low. This space will be called the Summer Municipal Theatre of the Municipality of Patreon.
The performances “Electra” by Euripides, directed by George Lyra, “Medea” by Euripides, directed by Heilakis-Dounia, “The Glass World” by Tennessee Williams, directed by George Nanouris, stand out.
The International Festival will also host the performances “Antigone” by Sophocles, directed by Cesaris Grausinis, “Philoctetes” by Sophocles as well as the music theatre performance inspired by the turbulent life of LOTTE LENYA, by Berlod Brecht, Aristophanes’ “Thesmophoria” directed by Yannis Bezos, Euripides’ “Iphigenia in Avlidis” directed by Themis Mumoulidis and “Prometheus the Bound” directed by Aris Biniaris.
Municipal Mobile Cinema
The “journey” of the Municipal Cinema Cinema in the neighbourhoods of Patras starts for the 6th consecutive year at 9.30 on Tuesday evening, June 14, at the atrium of the old Municipal Hospital.
This year the Municipal Cinema section is being held in collaboration with the Olympia International Film Festival for young people and children. Through this collaboration, the Cultural Organization of the Municipality of Patras aspires to bring children and young people of the region closer to good and award-winning cinema. The films are aimed at young and old and are fiction, animation and documentary films”.
The presentation of the programme was also attended by the sculptor – painter member of the Greek Chamber of Fine Arts (EETE), Christos Lambrou, who, at the end of the interview, gave the media representatives a tour of the International Sculpture Symposium, where the sculptures are made.
