The Department of Marine Sciences at the School of Environment of the University of the Aegean established and has been operating since the 2018–2019 academic year, an English-language Master’s Program (MP) titled “RESEARCH IN MARINE SCIENCES” (Reestablishment of the M.S. Program: Government Gazette 917/02.07.2024, Vol. B, and Update of the M.S. Program Regulations: Government Gazette 918/02.07.2024, Vol.
B, Regulations for Master’s and Doctoral Studies at the University of the Aegean (Appendices III and V of the Institution’s Internal Regulations – Government Gazette 6876/B/19.12.2025)). This Call concerns the selection of graduate students for the 2026–2027 academic year.

The MSc program lasts three academic semesters, is delivered through a blended learning approach using standard blended learning formats, and awards a Master’s Degree (MSc) in the field of “Research in Marine Sciences (Research in Marine Sciences).

Aims and Objectives

The MSc Program entitled “Research in Marine Sciences” is guided by a coherent interdisciplinary approach and aims to further advance knowledge by providing a theoretical foundation in the field of design, implementation, and addressing specific challenges in conducting high-level specialized research in the marine and coastal environment, in areas related to physical and ecological processes, marine biosciences, the protection of ecosystems and the rational management of their resources, as well as sustainable development, the development of graduates’ academic competencies and skills, and the fulfillment of the country’s educational, research, social, and developmental needs. This approach follows the standard academic curriculum of international educational organizations and comparable master’s programs worldwide.

Earning a MSc Degree

To earn the Master’s Degree (MSc) , students must pass all courses in the program, successfully complete the master’s thesis, and earn ninety (90) credit units (ECTS), which are distributed equally across the three academic semesters of study.

Full-time / Part-time Study

Working graduate students have the option of part-time study (it is recommended that they take half the number of courses offered per academic semester). Students in this category must provide proof that they work at least twenty (20) hours per week and submit a relevant employment contract or employer’s certificate. Part-time enrollment is also available for non-working students who are unable to meet the requirements of full-time enrollment due to health, family, military service, force majeure, or other reasons.

Duration of Studies

The duration of study in the MSc program leading to the award of a Master of Science (MSc) degree is set at three (3) academic semesters, including the time required to complete the thesis.

Upon completion of the first winter academic semester, a thesis (specialization dissertation) is prepared in the form of a scientific publication, which must be submitted to an international scientific journal. During the second and third semesters, students are trained in conducting research in the marine environment and in writing scientific publications, and they put into practice the techniques and methods taught within the framework of a research topic to be jointly decided with their supervising supervising professor. The research process includes all of the following phases: thesis initiation, formulation of research questions, extensive literature review, research design and methodological framework, research implementation (in the laboratory or in the field), data analysis, and writing a scientific article. Attendance in classes and participation in all types of educational activities, such as assignments, exercises, etc., are mandatory.

Mode of Instruction

In the MSc program “Research in Marine Sciences,” courses are taught both in person and through distance learning methods. Specifically, enrollment in the program requires students to be physically present at the Department’s facilities in Mytilene during the first academic semester. In-person instruction during the first semester takes place over 11 weeks of classes. Students’ participation during the following two semesters may take place in person or via teleconferencing, depending on the subject of the research topic selected by each student.

Language of Instruction

The language of instruction for the courses is English. The thesis must be written in English, and the required submission of a paper to an international scientific journal must also be in English.

Number of Admissions

The maximum number of admissions per year is set at ten (10) graduate students.
