The Department of Sound and Image Arts of the School of Music and Audiovisual Arts at Ionian University announces the Postgraduate Programme (MSc) titled “Audiovisual Arts in the Digital Age” (Official Gazette 2936/20.07.2018, vol. B, and Official Gazette 7372/31-01-2025, vol. B) for the academic year 2026–2027, in accordance with the provisions of Law 4485/2017. This MSc focuses on fostering and providing specialisation in the creative field of new forms of artistic expression using exclusively digital media (digital arts / new media arts), as these are grounded in the creative foundations of traditional art forms (visual arts, printmaking, sculpture, as well as music / sound production), but are primarily and exclusively differentiated and developed through the integration of constantly evolving digital interactive and audiovisual technology
The MSc leads to the award of a ΜSc Diploma titled Audiovisual Arts in the Digital Age. The programme is full-time, and part-time study is not available for applicants.
For the academic year 2026–2027, the maximum number of available postgraduate student places in the programme is 35.
About
The aim of the MSc is to promote scientific knowledge, research, and artistic creation in the interdisciplinary creative field of digital audiovisual art and communication / the creative industries, through the use of contemporary interaction technologies and audiovisual representation, with emphasis on applying the scientific thinking relevant to the above and on producing artistic work.
These opportunities are offered primarily to artists who have already demonstrated creative experience and artistic output through the use of traditional expressive media, widely used in the Fine Arts, and who wish to specialise in the use of the new media offered by digital audiovisual technology and interaction technology, in order to transform their artistic identity so that it:
a) is defined as an autonomous artistic work belonging to the field of digital art, and more specifically to sound art, image-based art, or their multimedia combination; or
b) includes features of activity in the fields of the creative economy and audiovisual communication and industry.
Course of Studies
The total duration of study leading to the award of the Master’s Diploma is set at three (3) semesters. The curriculum includes semester-based teaching units (modules), which are distributed across the first two semesters of study, while the third semester is devoted to the preparation of the Master’s Dissertation.
The teaching units in the first two semesters are delivered through a combination of theoretical and laboratory instruction, together with individual or group assignments completed by postgraduate students. In all cases, given the strongly applied and creative character of the programme, these assignments account for at least 50% of the total educational workload of each teaching unit. At the same time, postgraduate students participate in the Department’s annual Audiovisual Arts Festival, which takes place in May, as part of the educational process.
The assessment method for each teaching unit (written, oral, or through assignment(s)) is announced at the beginning of the relevant semester.
The language of instruction is Greek. However, the Master’s Dissertation may also be written in English, following the student’s choice in consultation with the supervising lecturer.
Attendance in the teaching units takes place either in person (10% of the total teaching hours of the teaching units and/or seminars) or remotely (90% of the total teaching hours of the teaching units and/or seminars), depending on the needs of the postgraduate students. In the above cases, a dedicated synchronous tele-education platform is available. Specifically for the research component of the teaching units, this is carried out by the postgraduate students under the continuous supervision of the relevant lecturers, who monitor progress through specific group or individual sessions, in person or remotely.
It should be noted that, as the development of the current health crisis remains uncertain, if new emergency measures are again taken by the Ministry of Education to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and remote education is imposed as a necessity, the Department of Sound and Image Arts and, specifically, the MSc in Audiovisual Arts in the Digital Age, has the appropriate infrastructure and will, in any case, operate in accordance with the Ministry’s circulars and the legislation regulating such matters.
