The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy, the Municipality of Livadia and the ” Allotropia – People’s Academy of Letters, Arts and Tradition” present the exhibition “RISE MY SOUL”!… Images and music of the refugees of ’22. The opening will take place on Monday, March 4, 2024 at 19:00, on the ground floor of the exhibition venue of Kryas Springs “Neromilos”, in Livadia. The city of Livadia is another important stop in the rich journey of the exhibition, which started in Athens and has so far included Drama, Kavala, Ioannina, Thessaloniki, Agrinio, Nea Ionia, Volos, Alexandroupolis, Serres and Nicosia.

The exhibition is structured in two main sections. Life in the lost homelands of Asia Minor, Eastern and Northern Thrace, Cappadocia and Pontus before 1922, followed by Exodus, loss, the trauma of refugeeism and life in the new homeland are the main themes of the first section. The role of music in the individual and collective identity of refugees and its importance as a driving force of refugee Hellenism constitute the second section: How are the memories of the Catastrophe recorded in the songs of the refugees? In what way do the memories reach our days and are perceived in the national life and musical creation of the descendants?

Photographic, audiovisual and archival documents of important institutions for the preservation of historical memory in our country, associations, organizations and individuals, converse in the exhibition with lyrics and various melodies: dirges, traditional songs and dances, Asia Minor rebetika as well as modern Greek music production, which was influenced by the musical breath of the refugees.

The opening event will be accompanied by the music of the music band “Iliatores”, with Christos Zographos, Christos Pappas and Philon Karampetsos. The songs will be introduced by the researcher of Traditional Music and Rebetika, Antonis Kontos. The last day of the exhibition, Saturday 16 March, from 10am to 12am, will close with songs and music by the Music School of Livadia.
