The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy, the Region of Central Macedonia – Regional Unit of Serres, the Lyceum of the Greek Women of Serres and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Serres present the exhibition “RISE MY SOUL”!… Images and music of the refugees of ’22.
The opening will take place on Sunday 10 December 2023 at 12:00, at the Archaeological Museum of Serres. The city of Serres, with the rich cultural heritage of the refugees of the ’22, is a key point on the exhibition’s route – a route that has begun in May 2022 in Athens and has so far included Drama, Kavala, Ioannina, Thessaloniki, Agrinio, Nea Ionia Volos, Alexandroupolis and Nicosia.
The exhibition is structured around two main thematic axes. The first is life in the lost homelands of Asia Minor, Eastern and Northern Thrace, Cappadocia and Pontus before 1922, followed by Exodus, loss, the trauma of refugeeism and life in the new homeland. The role of music in the individual and collective identity of refugees and its importance as a driving force of refugee Hellenism constitute the second thematic axis. How are the memories of the Catastrophe recorded in the songs of the refugees? In what way do the memories reach our days and are perceived in the national life and musical creation of the descendants?
Photographic, audiovisual and archival documents of important institutions for the preservation of historical memory in our country, associations, organizations and individuals, converse in the exhibition with lyrics and various melodies: dirges, traditional songs and dances, Asia Minor rebetika as well as modern Greek music production, which was influenced by the musical breath of the refugees.
