“SMYRNE – THE DESTRUCTION OF A COSMOPOLITICAL CITY, 1900-1922” is the theme of the excellent documentary by Maria Iliou that will be screened on Saturday 24 September 2022 at 19:00 at the premises of the Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos in Sigri, as part of the celebration of the European Heritage Days 2022.

The documentary “Smyrna – THE DESTRUCTION OF A COSMOPOLITIC CITY, 1900-1922” brings to light unknown visual archival material about Smyrna in the early 20th century, the way Greeks lived alongside other communities and why this cosmopolitan Mediterranean port, which is still associated in our memory with the Catastrophe that came in September 1922, was so unique.

Filmmaker Maria Iliou has discovered a treasure trove of unknown photographs and film of Smyrna from the early 20th century in American and European archives. The director, along with historical consultant Alexandros Kitroev and their collaborators, unfold a fascinating story in a documentary film.
