Lina Mendoni instructed the officials of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kefallinia and Ithaca to update the museological study and prepare the Archaeological Museum of Vathy for the re-exhibition with new, modern equipment.

The Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, visited Ithaca in order to talk to the local bodies about issues related to the promotion and management of the island’s cultural reserve.

After a meeting at the City Hall, where Mayor Dionysis Stanitsas and his associates submitted for discussion all related issues of the island, the Minister visited the Archaeological Museum of Vathy, where building upgrade and accessibility works are being carried out, as well as preparations for the re-exhibition of the Museum’s collection. Lina Mendoni instructed the officials of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kefallinia and Ithaca to proceed with the updating of the museological study and prepare Museum for the re-exhibition with new, modern equipment, as well as to utilize the outdoor space for the exhibition.

The Minister also visited the Metropolitan Church of the Presentation of the Theotokos (‘Mother of God’), as well as the Cave of Nymphs, where she immediately requested an autopsy by a team of the Ephorate of Palaeoanthropology and Speleology of the Ministry of Culture to assess the condition of the cave, and plan a research program for its restoration.

The next visit was in the area of ​​Agios Athanasios, where a team from the University of Ioannina had carried out excavation activities in previous years, and the Minister concluded that immediate actions are needed to protect and highlight the antiquities that have been revealed.

The Minister of Culture and Sports was accompanied by the Secretary General of Culture, George Didaskalou, the head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kefallinia and Ithaca Grigoris Grigorakakis, the head of the Directorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities Maria Mertzani and officials of the Ministry of Culture.
