At the heart of Cynthia Gerothanasiou’s artistic work lies the human being as a social subject and, consequently, the unseen processes that contribute to human survival and evolution. In her latest series of works, however, one senses that she is examining this social being in a moment of solitude—a moment of slowing down or even of stillness. The artist focuses on moments of respite and contemplation, emphasizing their necessity for renewal.

Just as the human body regulates homeostasis to maintain the necessary balance among interdependent elements and achieve a stable internal environment —despite the changes occurring outside the body—, so too does a person’s conscious withdrawal from the whirlwind of daily life serve as a catalyst for their mental and spiritual renewal. If this voluntary homeostasis is successful, the flow is restored and life continues smoothly; if we dismiss it as unnecessary, then trauma is likely inevitable. Hence the choice of the title MEDItACINS · In a State of Homeostasis, which begins with a word coined by the artist and combines the concepts of medicine and meditation.

One could say that the artist herself follows a similar process of homeostasis in the creation of her works, thereby attempting to convey that same sensation to her audience. Working with spontaneous, subtle gestures and dynamic, repetitive movements—which serve as a form of active meditation for her— and rendering, through various media and techniques, a series of nearly monochromatic pictorial compositions, she offers us—without seeking to provoke any emotional or intellectual tension—minimalist “spaces” of spiritual and mental repose. She abstractly depicts a series of elements and events drawn from nature, from which human figures and inscriptions occasionally emerge, inspired in turn by the history of classical painting. The works, as the artist notes, “as surfaces of material documentation, in which spatial relationships are translated into condensed, incised traces, contribute to the process of revealing an inner, hidden state, and invite the viewer on a relaxed yet persistent visual journey.”

Furthermore, the exclusive use of a single color—specifically gold—reinforces the sense of calm he seeks to convey to viewers. The engraved metal surfaces thus take on a special role, as light is not merely an element that illuminates the work, but an active material that constantly alters our perception of it. Gold functions as a medium that transforms the perception of the work depending on changing environmental conditions or the viewer’s movement, but at the same time as a transcendent space of light and spatial suspension.

The choice of this specific color is by no means random, both aesthetically and structurally, as it constitutes a synthesis of light, space, and memory. The artist borrows this gold from the art of the Greek world throughout the ages. The golden field of Byzantine iconography that surrounds the figures of the saints represents, for the artist, the primary medium through which to evoke a sense of enchantment and spirituality in its broadest sense; a spirituality that already exists within us, provided we allow ourselves to retreat into our inner void—a timeless space—to daydream, reflect, and create the conditions for our own healing.
