The Municipal Market of Chania, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, is preparing to reopen its doors and return to everyday life in Chania. This grand reopening will be celebrated on Friday, December 4, 2026—exactly 113 years after it first opened—with a special inauguration ceremony that will symbolically mark a new era for this historic landmark.

With the major restoration project now in its final stages, the countdown to the grand opening has begun. December 4 promises to be a special day for Chania, with a major event that will place the Municipal Market at the heart of the city and symbolically mark the beginning of a new chapter in its history.

Generations of Chanians have gathered in its aisles; a significant part of the area’s commercial life has flourished there; and small, everyday stories have been written that have become part of the city’s collective memory. It is this deep connection to the people and history of Chania that gives the reopening of the Municipal Market its special significance.

With this in mind, the Municipality of Chania, in collaboration with the Greek National Opera, is preparing a major artistic event for the opening day, which will take place in and around the Municipal Market and will bring together the history of the monument, contemporary art, and the city itself in one place.

As part of the preparations for the opening ceremony, the Municipality of Chania and the Greek National Opera invite interested parties to submit artistic proposals for the artistic program on December 4.
