The Karfakis Archive and Family present Terra Femina | Γη Γυναικός , a retrospective exhibition of the Lefkadian painter Themistoklis Karfakis (1924–2014), opening on Monday, 20 July 2026, at Τh. Stamos Art Gallery,  in Lefkada. Curated by Fani Koulocheri and Anthee Sterghiou, the exhibition brings together the female figures—real and mythical—that the artist chose as his muses and as the central axis of his work. It runs through 30 July, with the opening reception taking place on 20 July, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition Terra Femina | Earth of Woman highlights, through the perspective of the Lefkadian painter Themistoklis Karfakis, female figures who, throughout the centuries, have shaped, marked, and defined contemporary reality.

It is a tribute to both the real and the mythical female figures that the artist chose as his muses, transforming them into the central axis of his work. Woman, as an ideal in Karfakis’s art, flourishes throughout every stage of life, free from constraints of age, society, politics, and culture.

This exhibition is not only a tribute to the female presence throughout time, but also a recognition of the feminine element as a bearer of identity, memory, and history.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Themistoklis Karfakis was born in Asprogerakata, Lefkada, in 1924. He was admitted with distinction to the Athens School of Fine Arts in 1950, but was forced to abandon his studies and continue as a self-taught artist, holding his first exhibition in Plaka in 1951. A member of the Greek Resistance from the age of seventeen, he carried a contemplative, indomitable spirit and steadfast values into both his painting and his iconography.

His work took him throughout Europe, the Middle East, America, and Africa. He participated in more than 50 exhibitions in Greece and over 300 abroad. His work can be found in various museums across Greece, Cyprus and private collections. He spent the final years of his life painting in his hometown of Lefkada and passed away in 2014 at the age of 91.
