Through 70 works, organized into 20 sections, the exhibition “Jannis Psychopedis: Landscapes of Memory. The Ones I Kept” traces the artistic career of  Jannis Psychopedis at the Vasilis & Eliza Goulandris Foundation Museum in Athens.

Jannis Psychopedis, “Broken Horizon” [part of a quadriptych], 1981. Coloured pencils on paper, 58.5 × 56 cm

The artist’s body of work spans more than six decades, beginning in 1962. During this time, political circumstances, personal experiences, historical events, and artistic explorations have influenced and shaped his work.

Jannis Psychopedis, “Portrait – Rhoe”, 1998. Oil on canvas, 100 × 100 cm

The exhibition features 70 works by the artist drawn from his personal collection—pieces he had chosen to keep in his studio. Through these works, the artist and the exhibition’s curator, Kyriakos Koutsomallis, invite visitors to seek out the inner connection between these seemingly so different periods.

Jannis Psychopedis, “Oracle” [triptych], 2003. Mixed media, 130 × 410 cm

Jannis Psychopedis emerged onto the art scene amid the liberal atmosphere of the 1960s, a period of intense questioning, rebellion, and deconstruction, which was also evident in the art world. He was a member of Art Group A, the group of Young Greek Realists, as well as the Center for Visual Arts. From the very beginning of his career, his works have been tangible examples of a neo-figurative shift that was becoming evident on a global scale and had inevitably reached Greece as well. His work blends Western influences with elements of Greek identity, and European and Mediterranean expressiveness.

The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive catalog in Greek and English, as well as a three-episode podcast series titled “B&E Goulandris Podcasts: An Audio Journey into the Enchanting World of Art,” which is available on all platforms.
