
The Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the School of Sciences at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens invites applications for admission to the MSc in Earth Sciences and the Environment for the academic year 2026–2027.
The Program is governed by the provisions of Law 4957/2022 in conjunction with the MDP’s Internal Operating Regulations, as in force following its approval by the Ministry of Education (Decision No. 200/15-04-2025) and Ref. No. 30015/19-03-2025 in accordance with the decision of the University Senate dated 08/04/2025 regarding the reestablishment of the M.S.P. (Government Gazette: 3434, Vol. B, August 17, 2018).
The MSc Program in “Earth and Environmental Sciences” lasts three (3) academic semesters (90 ECTS), including the time required to complete the thesis, and upon full and successful completion of the program, leads to the award of “Postgraduate Diploma of Specialization in Earth and Environmental Sciences” from the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in one of the following specializations:
- (Geophysics and Seismology)90 ECTS.
- (Environmental Monitoring and Sustainability) 90 ECTS.
- (Geoconservation and Climate Variability) 90 ECTS.
- Prospective Graduate Students
The MSc program in “Earth Sciences and the Environment” accepts applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree from a Geosciences Department in Greece or from equivalent institutions abroad recognized by DOATAP, as well as graduates of Technological Educational Institutes (TEI) in a related field of study. Also eligible are holders of a bachelor’s degree from departments of Greek universities in fields related to or complementary to the Geosciences, or from equivalent institutions abroad recognized by DOATAP. Non-exhaustive examples of such graduates include Physicists, Chemists, Oceanographers, Biologists, Geographers, Archaeologists, Surveying Engineers, Civil Engineers, Mining Engineers, Environmental Scientists, Environmental Engineers, and Agronomists (Article 4, paragraph 4.1 of the Regulation).
In addition to the number of students admitted, one (1) member from the categories of E.E.P., E.D.I.P., and E.T.E.P. categories per year, provided that the work they perform at the Institution is relevant to the subject area of the M.Sc. program (Article 4, paragraph 4.3 of the Regulations).
Students who have completed their studies by the application deadline as specified in this announcement, and who have no outstanding examination requirements whatsoever, are also eligible to apply. If candidates in this category have not yet received their degree, they must submit a certificate of completion of studies indicating their degree grade, issued by the Secretariat of the Department or School where they studied.
- Number of Students Admitted
The maximum number of students admitted to the Master’s Program is set at forty-five (45) in total. Each specialization accepts fifteen (15) students, a number that may be increased to a maximum of sixteen (16) to eighteen (18) only if there are vacancies from other specializations (Article 4, paragraph 4.2 of the Regulations).

Applicants are requested to submit their application to the Secretariat of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment via email at [email protected], with the subject line “APPLICATION – MASTER’S PROGRAM IN EARTH SCIENCES AND THE ENVIRONMENT” followed by the candidate’s FULL NAME, and the Application (Expression of Interest Form) and the required supporting documents must be attached. The deadline is 3:00 PM on September 22, 2026.

- A copy of the degree or a certificate of completion of studies and a detailed transcript (of undergraduate studies and, if applicable, graduate studies), or an official certificate of completion of studies (as described in paragraph 1).
- A copy of the MA degree and detailed transcript (if applicable).
- Holders of academic degrees from foreign institutions must submit a certificate of equivalence and recognition from DOATAP, in accordance with Article 5, Paragraph 5.5 of the Regulations.
- Certificates of English proficiency, at a minimum B2 level.
- Certificates of proficiency in another foreign language, which may be one or more of the following: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese.
- Motivation letter, in which applicants explain their personal and/or professional goals in relation to the specialization for which they have applied.
- Two letters of recommendation from faculty members, researchers, employers …
- Any other information that may strengthen the application (publications in scientific and technical journals, documentation of conference participation, seminars, etc., general-interest publications, documentation of experience in geoscience-related professional fields, documentation of other professional experience).
- A double-sided photocopy of your police ID.
Prospective graduate students are eligible to submit only one application for only one specialization.
- Candidate Selection
The selection of candidates is based on the following criteria:
- A grade of at least “good” on the first Bachelor’s degree or a prior Master’s degree: On a 10-point scale, the grade must be equal to or higher than 6/10.
- Functional knowledge of the English language (level B2 and above).
- Proficiency in one of the major European and world languages (e.g., French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese
- Additional studies or relevant training (Graduate, Undergraduate, relevant internships, Continuing education, seminars, retraining)
- Research activity (publications in journals or conference proceedings, participation in research projects)
- Professional experience related to the Geosciences
- Other professional expericence
- Motivation letter
- Interview
- Tuition and Fees
Graduate students are required to pay tuition fees for the “Earth Sciences and the Environment” Master’s Program at the start of each semester. The tuition fee for each student is eight hundred euros (€800) per semester (€2,400.00 for the entire program). The obligation to pay tuition fees (800 euros) also applies to the semester of study extension (Article 10, paragraph 10.12 of the Regulations).
