Culture Minister Lina Mendoni inaugurated the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia, the restoration and conservation works on three important Roman monuments: the Early Christian Basilica (Phidias’ workshop), the South Baths complex, and the Leonidaion Baths.

These are particularly significant monuments within the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia, which, until now, had not received the necessary care.

The restoration of the Roman-period structures brings new vitality to the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia. An exceptionally important monumental complex is being upgraded, which is now incorporated into the core visitor area of the site, expanding it by at least ten acres. In this way, the tour extends beyond classical antiquity, while the length of visitors’ stay is substantially increased.

The Early Christian Basilica is one of the most important monuments in Olympia, as it fully preserves the remains of the building’s classical phase, which, based on the findings, has been identified as the Workshop of Phidias. At the same time, the masonry from the later Roman phase is preserved to a great height. It is one of the very few monuments in the area that was in continuous use from the Classical to the Byzantine era. As part of the project, the monument was restored to its condition prior to the German excavations, and its architectural elements were reconstructed and restored, ensuring its long-term protection and preservation.

The complex of South Baths, located outside the enclosure of Altea, is a complex structure with distinctive architecture and significant historical value. The work included the stabilization, restoration, and enhancement of the surviving remains, the creation of visitor pathways, and flood protection measures, making the monument fully accessible and open to visitors.

The Leonidaion Baths, dating to the 3rd century AD, constitute a unique bath complex, as their roof, mosaic floors, heating system, and plumbing network remain almost entirely intact. The restoration work focused on reinforcing the masonry, waterproofing, and preserving the architectural and decorative elements.
