To honor the memory of Alexis Politis, the Society for the Study of Modern Hellenism/Mnimon magazine, together with his colleagues and friends—both younger and older—and with the kind support of the Athens Conservatory, is organizing a scholarly conference on Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25, based on his work and titled “Alexis Politis: Modern Hellenist. Reflections of his Work.”
The two-day conference centers on the concept of the Modern Greek scholar, as defined by him through his example and his writings. It includes a discussion prompted by the screening of an excerpt from a recorded interview with Alexis Politis, five sessions featuring twenty-one presentations, as well as a roundtable discussion, with topics related to Alexis Politis’s research interests, historical and literary (historiography and literature, folk song and popular culture, philhellenism and travel writing, history of the book and publishing, etc.), the mentors under whom he studied, the research groups in which he participated, and the institutions with which he collaborated (Institute of Modern Greek Studies, KNE/EIE, Mnimon, University of Crete), his “supportive environments” and “valuable tools,” as well as the significant impact of his presence and work on Modern Greek studies.
