With the addition of John Legend’s concert on June 30, this year’s artistic program at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus is now complete.

A modern legend, a legendary theater, and unstoppable momentum: John Legend—one of the biggest names in 21st-century music and a soulful innovator of soul and R&B—is coming to Greece for the first time for an exclusive performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

Coincidentally, the last day of June has already secured its place in history: the concert by this leading artist will be the final cultural event to take place on the theater’s welcoming stage before its closure and the start of extensive restoration work.

If we must resort to numbers to capture John Legend’s impressive career, we’ll need to literally take a deep breath before diving into this cascade of accolades, awards, and achievements: thirteen(!) Grammy Awards and the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2014—he is, after all, the first African-American artist to join the EGOT club, having won all four awards (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony)—four platinum and two gold albums, six platinum and five gold singles on the U.S. charts, as well as billions of streams across various platforms.

Some of the songs that attest to all of the above are “All of Me,” “Love Me Now,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Minefields,” and “Ordinary People,” among many others. The list of names he has collaborated with is enough to leave even the most discerning music lover speechless, including Ariana Grande, Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, André 3000, and Herbie Hancock.

The performance is part of the “An Evening of Songs & Stories” tour, a musical narrative in which each song serves as a milestone in life. In Latin, “Legenda” means to tell those stories that must be heard loud and clear, and that is exactly what John Legend does here: alone at the piano, he strips his compositions of their orchestral trappings and transforms them into a cinematic retrospective of the past, unfolding stories, experiences, and encounters that shaped his unique personal and artistic journey.
