On the occasion of the exhibition “Alexis Akritakis, A Line like A Wave,” which opened at the Benaki Museum on February 12, 2026, Agra Publications, edited by Chloe Akrithakis and Alexios Papazacharias, a comprehensive and multi-layered publication documenting the work and career of one of the most iconic artists of contemporary Greek art.
The volume is an independent publishing venture that provides an in-depth approach to the artistic practice and thinking of Alexis Akrithakis, complementing and expanding the publishing and visual arts dialogue that began almost a year earlier with the release of the book Writing Painting. Diaries 1960-1990.
The publication includes over 380 works, as well as texts and archival material covering the entire spectrum of Alexis Akrithakis’ artistic career, highlighting the distinct political dimension of his work through themes of his era and generation: fascism, dictatorship, the Cold War, sexual liberation, the Vietnam War, and space exploration, as well as works from his later period, including portraits of figures he observed during his brief stay at the Dromokaiteio. From his earliest creations to his last, his work unfolds across the pages of the volume Alexis Akrithakis – A Line like A Wave, illuminating the continuous evolution of his writing and his multifaceted visual language and practice.
The volume includes texts by Chloe Akrithaki, Alexios Papazacharias, Deni Zacharopoulos, Giorgos-Ikaros Babasakis, Gürsoy Doğtaş, Dionysis Kavvathas, Glykeria Basdeki, Petros Avlidis, and Ilias Papaeliakis, along with personal accounts by the artist and his friends, unpublished and republished texts by Dimitris Poulikakos, Dimitris T. Analis, Christos Ioakeimidis, Katerina Kafopoulou, and Dora Iliopoulou-Rogan. From various starting points and perspectives, they weave together a polyphonic narrative about the artist and his time, his life and his work. The layout of the visual and typographical elements by Lila Palaiologou, complex and coherent, completes a purely kaleidoscopic publishing project, with its striking and catalytic multicolour scheme.
