The opening of the exhibition entitled “Traces, Signs, and Monsters,” featuring works and constructions by artist Antonis Tsoupakis, will take place on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 6 p.m., at the Centre for Mediterranean Architecture. It is a joint organization with the Municipality of Chania and will last until Friday, January 23, 2026. The exhibition is curated by Myrto Kontomitaki, Museologist, Art Historian.

The recently deceased Antonis Tsoupakis, artist, architect, professor, and ecologist, used to get around on his favorite vehicle, his bicycle. A graduate with honors from the schools of Fine Arts and Architecture and with an exciting thirty-year teaching career at the University of Crete, where the naming ceremony took place in February 2025, in the “Antonis Tsoupakis Art Classroom” Amphitheater, he left behind a series of works of unique aesthetic significance and visual importance, including acrylics, engravings, photographs, architectural projects, poster designs, furniture, lighting, theater sets, and much more.

With an economy of materials, purely out of conviction and ecological awareness, Antonis Tsoupakis’ work surprises with its surrealistic and abstract visual language, while betraying his love for the artist Paul Klee. His penchant for mixed media is evident. By handling each material separately, without waste or fuss, he elevated each of his creations with apparent ease, which was, however, mainly due to his unique, elegant, liberated selectivity.
