This is the 16th – and somewhat peculiar – “stop” in revisiting the modern Greek poetic canon that “With Words (It Happens)” makes: after Solomos; Kalvos; Cavafy beyond his 154 “Recognized” poems; Papatsonis; Karyotakis and his contemporaries; Polydouri, Axioti, Aravantinou, and Hatzilazarou; Elytis and his poetic interlocutors; Embeirikos; Engonopoulos; Karellis; the four books of the Occupation: by Gatsos, Engonopoulos, Papatsonis, and Sikelianos; Papaditsas; Vakalo; Fokas; and Laïna.

Thirty-five years after Manolis Anagnostakis’s important and seminal publication, The Low Voice – Lyrics of a bygone era in old rhythms, which anthologized ‘traditional’ poems with meter and rhyme, from Lorenzo Mavilis (1860-1912) to Foti Paschalinos (1913-1943), contemporary poets select, reread, and comment on these poems.
