Description

The MA Programme in Creative Writing at the University of Western Macedonia is a programme with history, consistency and strong outward focus, which since 2008–2009 has been systematically cultivating writing and research in the Humanities. Now in its seventeenth year of operation, the programme has been renewed and offers four distinct pathways, allowing students to choose the one that best aligns with their goals: Creative Writing & Literary Production, Creative Writing & Education, Creative Writing & Screenwriting for Film and Television, and History & Writing of Pontic Literature. Our aim is to provide a fertile, academically grounded and creatively stimulating environment that strengthens writing practice, critical thinking, and personal voice.

The programme’s philosophy brings together theory, methodology and intensive workshops (prose, poetry, songwriting, theatre writing and screenwriting), enabling students to engage with contemporary tools for text analysis and production, explore the digital applications of literature, and develop skills in communication, collaboration and creativity. The MA leads to a comprehensive scientific training, with clearly defined learning outcomes and direct applicability in the private, public and academic sectors.

The teaching staff includes university faculty from Greek institutions, emeritus professors, acclaimed authors, poets, screenwriters and internationally recognised cultural practitioners from Greece and abroad. The learning experience is further enriched through masterclasses, guest lectures and meetings with writers and creators. The programme’s academic community has organised international Creative Writing conferences with broad participation and collaborations with leading institutions, strengthening both its outreach and the professional networks available to students.

The duration of study is four (4) academic semesters, including the MA thesis, amounting to a total of 120 ECTS. The programme supports students’ progress through a well-structured curriculum, modern assessment procedures and full access to libraries and electronic databases, while also offering options for part-time study and study suspension where necessary.

If you are seeking a postgraduate programme that combines academic excellence, hands-on writing practice and direct engagement with contemporary cultural production, the MA in Creative Writing is the ideal choice. You will write, reflect, collaborate, and transform your ideas into complete, meaningful works under the guidance of an experienced and internationally connected team of instructors.
