About the book

Angela Vaindirli travels with her six minor children from Chios to Piraeus in September 1922. She has left behind a middle-class life in Smyrna and her dead husband in Chios… Searching for traces of her and her children in archives, documents, photographs, and memories of descendants, her great-grandson, George Stassinopoulos, reconstructs a journey that begins in burning Smyrna, passes through the loss of her youngest child, who was given (?) up for adoption, to arrive at her first home in the refugee settlement of Vyronas, at the Exchange Commission and the embroidery workshops of the Near East Relief. The author presents facts and details that, beyond the passions of a refugee family in its attempt to survive the Catastrophe, recount the dramas, the twists and turns, but also the satisfactions that life has in store.
