
Honorary Doctorate of the Department of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was awarded to the Professor of Pathology at the Mayo Clinic of the USA, Mr. Victor M. Montori.The ceremony took place on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 19:00, in the Ceremonial Hall of the Old Building of the Faculty of Philosophy.

Professor Victor M. Montori, M.D., M.Sc., is a distinguished endocrinologist, health services researcher, and advocate for person-centered care. He holds the Robert H. and Susan M. Rewoldt Endowed Professorship of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he works in clinical, research, and educational roles, all focused on promoting human-centered care in healthcare. In addition, for the academic year 2024–2025, he is a fellow in the Human Rights and Technology program at the Harvard Kennedy School.
He was born in Lima, Peru, in 1970. He received his medical degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, followed by a fellowship in Endocrinology. With a Mayo Foundation scholarship, he earned a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Biomedical Research at McMaster University under the supervision of Dr. Gordon Guyatt, a pioneer in evidence-based medicine. Since 2002, he has been a member of the Mayo Clinic and a Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
Dr. Montori is internationally recognized for his contributions to evidence-based medicine, shared decision making, and the development of minimally disruptive medicine. In 2004, he founded the Knowledge and Evaluation Research Unit at the Mayo Clinic. He has served as research director of the SPARC Innovation Program, director of the Health Care Delivery Research Program, medical director of the Center for Social Media, and director of Late Stage Translational Research.
He serves on the board of directors of the National Advisory Council for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the International Society for Evidence-based Healthcare, the International Society for Shared Decision Making, AcademyHealth, and the Editorial Advisory Board for The BMJ.
With more than 800 publications that have received over 90,000 citations and an h-index of 140, Dr. Montori has been among the most prominent researchers in clinical medicine and the social sciences since 2014. His work includes clinical trials, data syntheses, clinical practice guidelines, and tools for shared decision making.
He has been honored with numerous awards, including the Karis Award for compassionate care, the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Mayo Clinic, and the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Alix School of Medicine.
He is the founder of the non-profit organization The Patient Revolution and author of the book Why We Revolt (2017), which will soon be published in Greece. The book offers a critique of industrialized healthcare and proposes a more humane approach.
He is married to Claudia Tabini and is the father of three children.
