With the tribute event at the monument of Golgotha in Ayia began the events of the Municipality of Chania for the 84th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete. At the point attended the Deputy Mayors Tasos Aloglou, Yannis Giannakakis, Yannis Nikiforakis and Yannis Drakakis, members of the Board of Chania, as well as representatives of authorities and agencies of the place.

A memorial service was held at the site and wreaths were laid by the institutions, while the Deputy Mayor of Finance, Tasos Aloglou, addressed the audience. Indeed, in the monument there is a faithful copy of the martyrdom pillar, where the Greek fighters were bound and executed.

In his address, the Deputy Mayor, regarding the importance of the event at the monument, noted: “Golgotha, with its symbolic and heavy name, was the final destination for so many Greeks executed by the German occupiers. In this place of martyrdom, we feel the need to reflect on the weight of their sacrifice and the message of indomitable resistance that they bequeathed to us. The Battle of Crete was not just a clash of arms, but is still today a reminder of the indomitable Greek spirit, which does not bow its head before any conqueror“.

Students from the General High School of Nea Kydonia, young students from the 2nd Primary School of Nea Kydonia with traditional songs and students of the Gymnasium of Nea Kydonia with a dance and theatre performance, charged the event with emotion.

The next event of the Municipality of Chania for the 84th anniversary of the Battle of Crete will take place on Thursday 22/5, at 18:30, at the Memorial of the Fallen of Nea Chora, in the port of Nea Chora, Chania.
