In the aftermath of the recent events related to the exhibition The Allure of the Bizarre, which have caused intense public controversy, and with the intention to contribute to the cultivation of a mild and scientifically informed public debate, the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum invites you to a scientific meeting on 6 May 2025, at 12:30, at the Onassis Foundation Amphitheatre, entitled:
“The freedom of art: Facts and Challenges”.

The conference will be attended by experts, lawyers, art historians, directors of cultural organisations, theologians. The following issues will be discussed during the conference:

Are there any restrictions on the freedom of art? What are the hard facts of a favourable state on the matter?

What happens when the right to free artistic expression clashes with the beliefs or religious sentiments of citizens? Are the “sacred” and the “profane” entirely distinct areas?

Are phenomena of censorship and vandalism unique to our time or do they have a history? Are they exclusive to our country or do they also occur elsewhere? What is the role of cultural organisations in relation to safeguarding artistic freedom? What challenges are looming for the present and the future?

What are the criteria for exhibiting works of art at the National Gallery?
