Description

The Departments of History & Archaeology, Philology, History and Philosophy of Science, and Digital Industry Technologies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in collaboration with the Institute for Language and Speech Processing of the “Athena” Research Center and the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Cyprus, organize and operate a Joint Postgraduate Program titled “Digital Humanities.”

The rapid development of Information Management and Internet technologies has resulted in the widespread development and use of tools based on these technologies, aimed at supporting the research process in the Humanities. The need to support this research field with tools enabling (a) the processing and analysis of large volumes of documents and data, and (b) the dissemination through modern visualization methods of research outcomes generated within the research activity, is imperative. In response to this reality, a new research field is emerging: Digital Humanities, which is beginning to produce valuable and significant research results, such as models for understanding and representing knowledge, models and systems for organizing information related to cultural heritage, text analysis tools, visualization tools, and three-dimensional representation of real and virtual spaces, among others.

Given this reality, scholars in the Humanities as well as Computer Science researchers need to specialize in order to actively participate in the research field of Digital Humanities. The aim of the Joint Postgraduate Program is to establish postgraduate studies and to develop and expand research in a rapidly evolving field of significant scientific, social, and economic importance, such as Digital Humanities. The Program will comprehensively cover this scientific field through its four specializations: (a) Data Analytics, (b) Geographic Information Systems, (c) Text Encoding and Knowledge Extraction, and (d) Three-Dimensional Representation Technologies.

A primary objective of the Program is to attract new scholars and provide them with high-level scientific knowledge and research training in line with the requirements of modern research and society. Additionally, it aims to enhance and broaden the international visibility of the scientific and research work of the collaborating Departments and Research Center on the scientific subjects they address. Finally, it aims to promote and develop interdisciplinary approaches to the material and immaterial culture of the past, and to strengthen the scientific and research capabilities of the Humanities.
