Ioannina and Pamvotida are for Lena Navrozoglou endless sources of inspiration and creativity. The history of their people moves her, the waters of the lake and their transformations feed her art with images and the ecosystem fascinates her. Her new work, presented at the Joseph and Esther Gani Foundation, includes 37 different mosaic artworks on 25 species of birds that live in or regularly visit Ioannina and its lake.

A great deal of preparatory work was required for the design of these works. Lena Navrozoglou methodically sought out and photographed the birds on the banks of the Pamvotida and on the roofs of Ioannina, in order to render them in mosaic. The rendering using stone mosaics of these airy creatures, which fly in the sky or stand lightly on thin branches, forms an interesting visual paradox. The different size of the coloured chips, moreover, creates a sense of brushwork, while each stone reflects the light, bringing the image to life. Finally, the background where the birds are placed, coloured in bright blue, bright yellow or fiery red, distracts them from their natural environment and places them in the artistic universe of their creator.
