The fifty five sonnets to Orpheus were written as an obituary for Vera Ouckama Knoop, a young dancer who died of leukemia when 19 years old.  Here, Orpheus is Rilke himself at critical juncture of life, when he sees youth being sapped by death “unreasonably” and himself faced with the “common fate”.
