CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT

“VASSILIS MOSKOVIS 2022 AWARD”

The Municipality of Athens honoring the memory of the famous Symian writer and donor, Vassilis Moskovis, announces, through the Organization of Culture, Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA), a competition for the “Vassilis Moskovis 2022 Award” addressed to writers of Historical, Folklore, Linguistic and other works referring to the History and Culture of the Dodecanese (as a whole or of any specific isle).

All those who have scribed a study/work related to the History and Culture of the Dodecanese, which have been published in the last three years, can participate in the competition, so that they can be considered by the competent jury.

The award will be accompanied by a cash prize of €1,000, while the committee can award up to two honorable mentions.

The works can be submitted until Friday, September 29, 2023 to the Culture, Sports and Youth Organization of the Municipality of Athens (50 Akadimias, 106 79 Athens), Department of Administrative Support (Protocol), to the Directorate of Culture/ Department of Museums, Collections and Cultural Sites with the indication “For the Vassilis Moscovis Award” or sent to the above address by post.

The Jury consists of:

1. Mina Al. Alexiadis – Professor Emeritus of Folklore of the ΝΚUA
2. Ioanna Gennimata – Member of the Board of Directors of the Organization of Culture, Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA)
3. Emmanuel Perselis – Professor Emeritus of Theology of the NKUA

*The President of the Union of the Symians “The Panormitian” is defined as an alternate member.

Vassilis Moskovis, donor to the Municipality of Athens, handed over the Dodecanese House with its Collections to the Municipality of Athens, which has been in operation since 1996.

The author, in the Dodecanese House presented and represented various customs and living traditions of the Dodecanese. For this reason, the location was called the Dodecanese House and not a Museum. Since 1977 it has established an annual prize for the best study on the culture of the Dodecanese.

The Cultural Organization of the Municipality of Athens took over in September 1996 the continuation of the work of Vassilis Moskovis. He renovated the building and started organizing special tours, both for those interested in scientific study and for students of primary and secondary education, familiarizing our young people with folklore elements that are slowly disappearing, conveying to them the actual idiosyncrasy of the Dodecanese.
